about

“gigante” is the Portuguese term for “giant”

It is also the name of a very small atelier that focuses its practice on editorial projects, run by Rita Ferreira. Sometimes we work alone; other times, we collaborate with proofreaders, illustrators, translators, publishing houses, musicians, cinematographers, activists, and almost always with cats around.

Rita Ferreira is a Portuguese graphic designer. Their work spans over 15 years, encompassing design to publishing, in close collaboration with clients and partners, driven by the intersections between design, arts, and activism.

In 2023, Ferreira was an artist in residence for the Urban Nation’s “Fresh A.I.R.” program, with a project named Coral, experimenting around language and migration, cartography, and sound, in Berlin.

Ferreira is currently a PhD candidate in Design at the Fine Arts School of Porto. Their research project investigates design through vinyl record covers from former Portuguese colonies—Angola, Mozambique, Cabo Verde, Guinea-Bissau, and São Tomé e Príncipe—exploring how this material culture unfolds counter-narratives to Lusotropicalism.
